Cannabidiol or hemp oil is a compound derived from agricultural hemp and is associated with numerous health benefits. Many people are familiar with cannabidiol, which is commonly found in hemp oil products.
The difference with a full spectrum oil versus a cannabidiol only is the extraction process, whereby a full spectrum oil does not isolate one compound, but rather it contains a range of cannabinoids and compounds found in the original plant. Unlike isolated or synthetic cannabinoids, a full spectrum oil allows cannabinoids to work together to magnify their therapeutic effects in what is called the entourage effect.1
Aside from cannabinoids, hemp contains valuable vitamins and minerals, fatty acids, protein, fiber, chlorophyll, flavonoids, and terpenes. With all the essential amino and fatty acids present, hemp oil is a full nutritional source.2
While cannabidiol is the most abundant cannabinoid found in hemp, we choose to make our products with full-spectrum hemp oil, which includes all of the cannabinoids.
Hemp and marijuana are both derived from the cannabis sativa plant species. While both contain the psychoactive component tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), they are distinctly different strains with varied phytochemical uses.3 Unlike marijuana, hemp contains almost no THC, the compound that produces the ‘high’; instead has a higher concentration of cannabidiol. The lack of THC in hemp oil makes it a preference to many who want relief without the psychoactive side effects found in marijuana.3
Research suggests a whole plant extract containing a high percentage of cannabidiol but also traces of other cannabinoids is more effective in alleviating inflammation and soreness than cannabidiol-only solutions. Furthermore, cannabidiol on its own yielded a bell-curve of effectiveness, which is not desirable for medical treatments seeking effective relief that corresponds with the dosage.4
While cannabidiol is getting an increasing amount of exposure thanks to research of the therapeutic properties, hemp oil is a powerhouse containing many essential vitamins and minerals, fatty acids, fiber, protein, chlorophyll, flavonoids, and terpenes.
Vitamins and Minerals
As a nutritional source, extracted hemp oil contains an extensive list of naturally occurring vitamins, including B complex, fat soluble, zinc, magnesium and, beta carotene.5 With nutrient deficiencies highlighted amongst many of the United States population, particularly vitamins B and D, hemp oil as a dietary source may be of benefit.6
Full-spectrum hemp oil contains minerals like magnesium, zinc, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and iron which are essential for a variety of bodily and nerve functions and metabolic processes. They are also important for building strong bones and the health of our blood, skin, and hair.7
When viewed as a complete dietary supplement, we begin to see the value of hemp oil beyond being a source of CBD. As an optimal source of essential fatty acids, full-spectrum hemp oil offers the two essential fatty acids – Omega 3 and Omega 6 in the optimal 3:1 ratio. Deficiencies in these fatty acids lead to a host of symptoms and disorders including abnormalities in the liver and the kidneys, reduced growth rates, decreased immune function, depression, and dryness of the skin. Adequate intake of the essential fatty acids results in numerous health benefits.8
Why Is Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil Important?
The array of cannabinoids and other natural constituents found in full-spectrum hemp oil have been shown in studies to work together in what’s referred to as the “entourage effect.”. It is this union of a complex mix of cannabinoids, essential nutrients, protein, and healthy fats that work together to provide homeostasis and balance in our health.
